The Cushman Scooter is
well known as one of the first scooters on the market. Its roots go
back many years, all the way to the 1930’s. They were developed,
believe it or not, by the idea that a small boy had when he rolled into
the Cushman plant with a washing machine motor attached to his scooter.
This was the beginning of years and years of production, success and new
beginnings for the Cushman Scooter.
The first Cushman
scooter was sold in 1936. From the first moment, sales took off.
People enjoyed the thrill and the ease of use of these scooters. They
were economical and they were fun to ride. Throughout the years, they
would be used in World War II as transportation for the army, the navy,
and the troops that were defending behind enemy lines.
The company was bought
and sold several times throughout history. It was still making scooters
though. And, they developed many of them. Changing the form and the
engine style enough to improve quality, use and affordability, they were
able to hold onto their customer base for many years. The Cushman
scooter is still sought after today and the antiques especially are
valuable.
